Some time ago XGen Studios released a free Flash version of Defend Your Castle which unwittingly spawned a small following of loyal defenders. The game was unquestionably entertaining, but here at WiiWare World we don’t want to waste our time..
Defend Your Castle
Defend Your Castle (WiiWare)
Those crafty barbarian hordes have amassed their forces once again to challenge your domain. Will you and your court rise to the challenge, or stand aside as they raze your Castle to the ground?
You are the commander of your castle, and it is your duty to pick up the enemy and mercilessly fling them to their demise. Perform this task well, for the invaders you face are numerous and employ many different types of soldiers in their quest for your castle.

XGen takes a Flash game favourite and gives it a lick of WiiWare coloured paint.

Looking good.. looks like they've made a genuine effort to make this something seriously special.. in a different way from the flash version. Cool. Will need to wait and see now how they expand on the actual concept, just to make the game feel like.. bigger, somehow, than the web version.

I'm actually pretty excited for this game and its "Hey, I'm not part of the crowd!" style. So excited, I've made a Wikipedia article on it. It is small, though it is pretty well written if you ask me. I stayed away from the 'big words' though, so everyone could understand. XD

I can't believe you are so excited. The only explanation is that you must work for X-Gen Studios. I think this game can't really expand much beyond the basic concept. The article is well written. I suggest everyone saves five bucks and plays the tried and true version, Flash style.

Peter, this isn't any killer app to say the least, though it just looks like the best of the 'poor man's' WiiWare. Plus, I needed to boost my Wiki-larity up with good writing skills.

For 500 points (official price) I think this could be a good multiplayer game. As a single player game it gets old in about 20-30 minutes (FLASH version that is). I'm excited for its 4 player drop in/out, so I'll let you guys know what I think as I plan to get it.
16. ballkirby1

only 500 points. Well 500 isn't that much, but probably if I get it they'll release dr.mario which is 1000 wii points but I'm a little nervous about the price for toki tori and if I get this and dr.mario I'll have 500 points left and it'll probably cost more than that.

It looks alright. I wasn't much of a fan of the flash version so I don't think I'll be getting this. I'll wait and see what reviews it gets and what people generally think of this. Plus it's got multiplayer which looks like it could be fun.

I got this game last night. The bad news is that the gameplay is almost exactly like the Flash game. There really aren't any gameplay upgrades over that version. The GOOD news is that it received a solid upgrade in the physics, control, and graphics departments!
The characters are super-easy to whip around the screen. With a slight flick of the wrist, you can send an enemy flying so far that you won't see him for another 5 seconds or so. (It's kind of cool to have just defeated a horde, only to have all their little stick/button bodies come crashing to earth seconds later! Mwhahaha!) This is a great improvement over the Flash game, where it felt like the only effective method of dispatching enemies was to smash them against the ground.
The use of the castle's defenses was a bit hard to get a grasp on in the Flash game. Thankfully, that's been smoothed out in the Wii version. Adding archers, masons, deploying suicide bombers, and developing "magic" are all intuitive actions that take no time to understand and use. This keeps the game moving at times when the Flash game just left you scratching your head.
The graphics of the game are great! The game has a home-project look to it; as if an accountant got bored and decided to make a game on paper. While the new graphics never gel into more than the sum of their parts, they do look nice and greatly help smooth out the gameplay. (I especially love the clouds hanging by yarn.
)
On a personal note, I like how the gratuitous violence was toned down for this release. I've worked with a lot of Flash developers, and they seem to think they're being "cool" or "edgy" by adding in blood, guts, and gore. IHMO, all they're doing is making their game inaccessible and undesirable to a large class of players. So kudos to XGen and Nintendo for developing a look that focuses more on the gameplay mechanic than on some mythical "edge".
All in all, this is not a "must buy" game. The gameplay is pretty simplistic, with the core mechanic trumping the building aspect of the game. It is fun, though, so if you have 500 points lying around, it's worth the money.

13 May 2008, 18:34 GMT
I got this yesterday and trust me, this game is awesome. It's so worth the overly-reasonable and modest price of 500 Points. It's such a steal at that price! The multiplayer alone is worth it, even with two people (I only have 2 Remotes).
I was so surprised how quickly me and my friend clocked hours on it! It's just so much fun and yeah, if they included blood, that would've been a big turn-off for me. The whole style change is certainly contingent with the audience they are targeting and it's just great to see the developers make such changes to appeal to our audience. The game is great. Enough said.

Just wanted to drop in and say thanks to everyone who's purchased Defend your Castle thus far! Looks like we're currently sitting at the #3 most popular title -- we couldn't have done it without you, and we hope you're all having a blast with the game.
Has anyone managed to make it past level 45 yet?
30. Objection_Blaster
13 May 2008, 21:05 GMT
@Xgen I am on Stage33 as of last night and pledge to play an hour a day! How many levels are there? Are there any unlockables for beating the game (on heroic or otherwise)?
31. KnucklesSonic8
13 May 2008, 21:16 GMT
Me and my best friend clocked HOURS on it yesterday. We played in more than MKWii, much to my surprise since I'm a huge MKWii fan.
I knew DYC would be great, but this is AWESOME. XGen: You guys did a fabulous job. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Thanks once again for removing the blood. It made a difference.
And #3 is so predictable. You guys had a strong launch, for sure.
I'm not past Level 45 yet. And me and my friend were also wondering how many stages there are. He thinks 100 but I think there's 50 tops.
Also, the yellow flag guys were ticking us off a bit, but in a good way. We put 200 guys there and no new uppgrade/item (mind you, we get the items faster but we thought that after we got the bomb at 100-something, we'd get something at 200). xD
I assure you, XGen, I'll be playing this over and over again, and I know that's what you'll like to hear.
What else can you tell us about the game/any other titles you plan to bring to WiiWare?
It's neat being able to speak with a developer. This is my third time doing so.
32. XGen
13 May 2008, 21:55 GMT
There are actually unlimited levels, so the game ends only when you want it to. The real question is, how high can you get?
That said, there are still a few surprises in store for players who get a little further along in the game, as well as some cool easter eggs scattered around. We tried to cram in as much as we possibly could for five bucks.
Awesome to hear how much you're enjoying the game. Unfortunately, past 100 mages all you'll get is a shorter cooldown on your spells (which, mind you should prove very useful in late-game). Also, a shorter cooldown on the instant-conversion spell is always useful as you get converts faster and faster.
As you probably guessed, I can't speak to what we're working on next, but I can assure you that fans will not be disappointed.

Lol, DJ. My friend's thumb/hand were sore. Mine aren't.
Unlimited levels = Sweet, XGen!
And that's great. You guys did a great job for sure.
And yeah, the shorter respawn time helps a lot later on. I think we're past Level 30 ... either that or ON Level 30. Heh.
Yep, yep. But I'm glad "fans won't be disappointed". That in itself is a great assurance. And don't worry, I can piece things together. you don't have to tell me anything. I can just speculate for now. Heh. But I'll be looking forward, certainly, to seeing more of your titles on WiiWare if they're as appealing and specifically created for the Wii audience. You show that blood doesn't have to be in a game for it to sell, something I always try to get across especially since for the most part, I'm against violence of that nature (e.g., M-Rated games, etc.).
Anyway, the game's strategy, challenge, addictiveness, and overall style (not to mention the sick interface) all lends itself to DYC's success. And since you're here. PRICING MAKES A DIFFERENCE. you guys were really smart to put it a measly 500. At that price, it's a steal. Thanks for not trying to promote it as being a quick buck. I look forward to your further WiiWare support!

KnucklesSonic8 said... Did I hear catapults? That sounds interesting!
Indeed it is! The blasted things are stupidly hard to defeat, too. If even one of those rocks hits your castle, your defenses will start to crumble. Yet you can't blow up the catapults, nor can you pick them up. The only standard defense is to rock them by continuously clicking on them. After a while, they fall apart.
One trick I learned, however, is that you can erase them with magic. So keep that eraser in reserve for when one shows up! Otherwise your best defense is to send out a suicide bomber to temporarily blow up the horde, then rock the living daylights out of that catapult!
51. sailingtheseaoffools
17 May 2008, 07:23 GMT
Or you could use the enemy suicide bombers. I now use those guys to clear the gate area. They are quite effective. You can hear the catapults coming as well. The explosive does work may take it plus some suicide archery hits.
52. Objection_Blaster
18 May 2008, 01:39 GMT
Basically, catapults are a pain, unless you're lucky/clever enough to erase them. Best tactic IMO is to use a suicider or your Death-Bomb to clear the area around them and then erase. This only works if there's just one though...

XGen. Thank you for this game. I'd never played the PC one before, but after hearing people rave about this game I had to try it. I've logged about 5 hours in it so far, and I've yet to try multiplayer or Heroic difficulty. Not to mention the lulz I got from reading the credits.
@everyone scared of catapults:
Actually, any explosion action on screen - regardless of how far the explosion is - causes damage to all catapults on screen. Often, the enemy will send several waves of bombers when the catapults appear. (unless there's only one, and then the bombers may not appear at all - scary!)
Considering the charge-time for their attack gets reset every time they take damage, you can stagger the explosions (which include your bomb spell, btw) to eventually rid of them and never take a hit! Killing them with the eraser nets you 0 points - assuming you manage to hit them. You'll end up with masses on screen and the eraser may not always hit who you want. At least bombing gives you points AND clears enemies.
I'm on 71 now. My first death was on 47. Died a few times on 47 and a LOT a lot on 53. Spent a good amount of conversions buffing my Stone Masons beyond 600. It helps once they're that high - I can start levels without healing and spend those points on fortification instead.

55. thewiirocks
18 May 2008, 18:49 GMT
@Big=Sexy - If you had put all those masons into archers, your castle would be self-defending by now. Once you hit 901 archers, it's game over for every enemy except the catapults. You can more or less sit back and rake in the points.
56. Big=Sexy
19 May 2008, 04:57 GMT
@thewiirocks:
I could have. But where's the challenge in that? XD
I wish I had thought of that, but I was under the impression that Archer kills net you nothing but dead people. It wasn't until my Masons hit 600 that I even bothered pushing Archers beyond 50.
I can only imagine how fast those Archers shoot at 900. Even at 250, it's difficult to see individual arrows from the shooting animation.
57. KnucklesSonic8
20 May 2008, 17:29 GMT
Big=Sexy/Adonis: Nice job getting that far! You're the furthest out of everyone else here.
Are Archers really that useful, though?
And the catapults sounds like they'd complicate things a lot which is great to see. And yes, the eraser comes in handy, for sure.
58. Big=Sexy
21 May 2008, 18:36 GMT
Yeah, the catapults are a huge deal. Having a large amount of archers could be helpful, as at 200 or so they start becoming a real force and take out plenty of guys for you.
I have to admit, it's a little unfair that you know my first name but I don't know yours! Care to divulge?
59. Objection_Blaster
22 May 2008, 02:39 GMT
I am also surprised that archers are ever helpful. I have like 70 and they only kill a few people a level
I have about 200 mages and 120 masons...but I use too many people as suiciders to build my numbers much nowadays
60. KnucklesSonic8
22 May 2008, 15:53 GMT
Big=Sexy: Why does EVERYONE pull that guilt trip on me when they divulge their real name and as such, they automatically expect me to divulge also. XD
I use Suicide Bombers wisely, especially with the Bomb given by the Mages.
61. Big=Sexy
22 May 2008, 16:15 GMT
I apologize. I didn't mean it that way.
The email I used was primarily intended for family members and close friends only. I had forgotten that, as I'd been using it to register for sites recently. And as such, had forgotten that it actually displays my real first name.
I really was trying to say it in such a way that you didn't have to, especially if you were younger than I expected. I understand privacy is a large issue, and I don't intend on intruding on any.
Anyway, back to topic. Yeah, push those bombers out at good intervals. I always try to leave at least one ally available at all times, in case I get bombarded by an insane amount of units at an inopportune moment.
The cooldown in spells isn't immediately noticeable, but you can really feel the difference at every 50 added or so. If you're having trouble building allies, try to change up your strategy a bit. Find ways to clear tons of people without using too many of your own bombers, so you can save conversions for something else. Try letting enemy bombers get closer before setting them off. And if all else fails, you can ignore the damage by not using bombers and focus on converting. You'll probably die, but you won't lose any allies accumulated or points earned. As long as you maintain at least 5000 points - which is easy once you get high enough to worry about stuff like that - you can recover everything every time you lose. As far as I can tell, there doesn't seem to be any penalty for dying.
62. KnucklesSonic8
22 May 2008, 18:17 GMT
You didn't have to explain yourself but thank you for doing so and thanks for respecting my privacy. It was kind of a joke but I've been asked this quite a few times, actually. But I am 17 so don't go thinking I'm 10 or anything. xD
And that's what I do, too. I always leave one unit available for when things get insane.
At least 5000 Points, hm? I'll keep that in mind. I've gotten Game Over with my friend twice I think and we barely had enough health to carry on. The 5000 Points for Refilling all your Health is obviously what you're referring to.
Don't you just love this game?
63. Big=Sexy
22 May 2008, 23:13 GMT
Ah, well, if you were 10 and spoke/wrote that well, I'd have to assume you were some sort of prodigy!
Yeah, this game is so much fun. I'm on Round 101 now, and there still isn't anything new yet. I was hoping a new enemy type would show up by now, but I guess the catapults are the last ones. Don't get me wrong - it's still getting hectic. Catapults are coming in packs of 3 at minimum now, and those giant googly-eyed soldiers are becoming a real menace, coming in packs of 5 or greater. Raising my archers help minimize their forces substantially, but it's as I suspected - you don't get points for archer kills. Before I started adding more archers, I averaged out 10,000 points per round. Now I'd be lucky to hit nine thousand. With the larger amounts of enemies coming, maybe that'll change soon.
Btw, I haven't used a bomber since Round 75. My spells load so quickly, I had no use for them by then.
Also, it wasn't until they hit around 600 that I finally noticed the ammunition the archers were using. Staples. Wow. I should have guessed, but when I realized it, I laughed so hard I nearly lost that stage.

To clear things up:
All you have to do is click these while playing the credits. There's three that I've found, so aside from putting them here, I'm submitting them to GameFAQs, as I've seen no one's done that yet.
Chuck Norris : All units are small
SMB3W4 : All units are huge
IM IN UR CONSOLZ DFENDIN UR CASLEZ : All units are catapults
No joke. It's actually kinda boring when there's nothing but catapults. But it is rather daunting, isn't it?
Keep in mind that the range needed to kill units from picking them up is the same regardless of size.

It may not be obvious, but you can actually click the Catapult's projectiles in the air to detonate them before they hit your castle.
What the team here likes to do is start playing in lolcats-mode and just let the catapults pile up, then compete to see who can snipe the most projectiles out of the air before the castle gets destroyed. It's surprisingly fun after a long day of coding.
On a side note, has anyone made it very far on Chuck Norris difficulty? I think the record here is level 20-ish, after which it becomes crazy difficult to keep up with grabbing the little guys.

lol go on www.google.ca and search "search chuck Norris" lol
Anyways @knuckles
Yeah I think I'm gonna download this one, and use a few points for DLC for MLAAK, and save the rest.

has anybody else besides Big=Sexy gotten to stage 100? i got there today, but it was a little easy after you get 800 of everything. oh, and Big=Sexy, the archers actually help a little bit. they shoot down hundreds(maybe thousands) of people.

@X-Gen:
No, that wasn't obvious at all. I'm definitely going to try that next time I play. Unfortunately, I STILL haven't played this multiplayer because no one wants to play with me. cries So I've still been playing this for the sheer insanity and fun of it all. No competitions for me!
Also, lolcats mode. I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE. Very clever wordplay.
@strade32:
The archers are useful - if you have a hard time dealing with the enemies, they can help dwindle down the numbers substantially. They're just not as great as they seem, because of the point loss you take just for having them around. You've got enough of them, now - sit back and don't do anything for a bit. Watch your archers take out pretty much everyone and notice that your score only increases when they happen to take out a bomber - and the resulting points come from the nearby enemies killed by the explosion.
It might be just me. I'm an old school gamer, and when I see a point counter, I want to put points in there. Especially since this game gives me something to do with them. It's understandable that the archers don't give you points, because if they did, you'd rack up score for doing absolutely nothing. It would be incredibly unbalanced and easy, and X-Gen's decision to make archers not give you points is undeniably smart.
But had I known that ahead of time, I probably wouldn't have that many archers. At this point, it doesn't make much difference to me to add them or not. Now, I'm trying to get all groups balanced and devote units to them evenly. I may stop this file and restart on Heroic difficulty soon, but for now, this is where I am.
Current Stats:
Round 106
Mages = 885
Archers = 866
Stone masons = 866
hElth = 111,730

i still manage to get 100,000 points with all my archers. i can see your point though. i thought you didn't get points for enemies killed by bombs?
this is where i stand(although i am only on level 101)
Mages=813
Archers=813
Stone Masons=813
Helth=87,040
How did you get all that extra helth?

@objection_blaster: Archers help me, i got 911. they kill everything, literally. i don't do anything and the people get nowhere near my castle. like somebody said(i forgot who) once you get 901, you are "invincible".
83. Objection_Blaster
06 Jun 2008, 02:04 GMT
@strade
and there are other bombers.
I see. I started over (was at 46 but used too many bombers) and now am at 25, NOT USING ANY BOMBERS. They are a waste of points and units, especially when you are good
84. strade32
06 Jun 2008, 04:23 GMT
yeah, i stopped using those after a while. i found out the same thing you did. now they just hold you back.plus, my magic bomb comes back in like 5 seconds, so i don't need them.

@strade32:
Above I mention dying often on stage 53. Instead of bothering with refilling my health (5000 point cost) I actually fortified the crap out of my castle. The amount of masons I had gained after that helped refill my health to the point that I didn't have to worry about it.
I also spent the beginning of the game not fortifying my castle at all, and only spent the points on the Conversion Pit and the towers. Once those were done, I piled everything else into fortification - because that's all that's left. I don't remember how many points I was getting before my archer count shot up, but I know it was a whole lot more than the 10,000 I'm pulling in now. That's the disadvantage with having lots of archers - you get less points which ultimately results in lower health.
Bombers are kinda the same way, but in reverse. They're useful - especially really early on - but once you get to a certain point (I think it was around round 75-80) they're not as useful anymore. Archers are better left for the later levels when it gets really hairy and you can't handle all those hooligans by yourself.
I know when I start on Heroic, I'm pumping everything into Mages and Masons before I bother with anything else.
86. strade32
06 Jun 2008, 20:30 GMT
good luck with heroic mode. i have found that i get 2000 helth points per round now. that nice compared to the 1000-1400 i was getting before. the rounds can get boring after you get 900 archers though. it's a good thing i saved another file before i got them.

Heh, for you pros out there (yes, if you have the patience to make it to level 100, you're a pro, God knows how long it took me...), please post something if you come upon anything new after the first hundred levels. I enjoyed this game, but after passing that hundred mark with 903 archers, I kind of lost incentive to continue.
My best wishes to those on heroic mode; you guys are insane.

And here I thought there was nothing more to the game other than getting 901 Archers and putting the Wiimote down. Giants, gnomes, Catapults, oh my...
I was trying the "ultimate challenge" - Heroic Mode with NO archer tower. I had something like 1000 mages and 800 masons, then hit level 40 and the catapults wiped me out.
Anyway, fantastic game; can't wait to see what's next!

09 Jun 2008, 11:14 GMT
Virus, you've given me a mission.
I'll keep going until I hit Round 150. If I don't see anything new by then, I'll move on to Heroic - though I'll keep the file in case I want to mess around in it a bit more.
FYI - nothing new beyond 100. Giants, bombers, catapults, soldiers (wallslammers) and rammers (they carry the popsicle sticks) are the norm, though the catapult count raises exponentially with every passing level.
I haven't played since my last post, where I was on Round 106, because Paper Mario and Grandia 2 were calling me. I needed my RPG fix. I am ashamed of my addiction
@Peznaze:
O.O
I think archers aren't that great, but to go without any? YOU HAVE SOME LARGE GRAPES, MY FRIEND.

I applaud you Big=Sexy. I hope it isn't that boring for you reaching 150 because if things just continue like they do at level 100, you're going to be watching your archers decimate 44 levels of enemies. Happy playing
As for you Peznaze, I'm bamboozled, I guess you could say. I thought by now with so many mages you'd just have unlimited spells with no cool-down. Well, however it is, may you survive.

There's no need to list numbers Mr. over9000, your word is good enough. My word is "addicting". If you like easy-to-learn gameplay with traces of hidden depth that will get you lost for hours, then this is the game for you! While it does get hard after a while, doesn't every game?

108. Mickeymac

A Gazillion out of ten. It's incredibly addictive, and is better than a lot of NES VC games at the same price. You got to get it when it comes to Europe. One word of warning though, it is repetitive, so if you have a history of being resistant to crack, the this may not be the right game for you.
109. supermario2
09 Jul 2008, 06:54 GMT
've actually been thinking that this may not be the greatest game around actually but yet the pc version was lovely so I don't Mickeymac should I get it? Cuz I feel it has same replay value as pOp as in playing short bursts before your arm breaks.

Go for it, and grab a good NES game while you're at, since you'll have spare points anyways. Even if it turns out it wasn't best purchase you ever made, it definately won't be the worst, especially if you pick a good NES game to go with it. I did and got Double the reward!

26 Jul 2008, 00:54 GMT
@DaDun
Thats hard to say, depending on what you need to receive in order for it to be "must-have." It's only 500 points. Its fun for several hours in single player (but you might want to take breaks or your wrist will get slightly sore) and is great for multiplayer. It also has a good sense of humor, such as people using tongue depressors as battering rams. I've downloaded 5 Wiiware games as of now (FFCC:MLAAK, DYC, LostWinds, Toki Tori, Magnetica Twist) and this is still in my top 3 favorites. Unless there's something you want more, I'd go for it.
123. Dalek Gerbil
26 Jul 2008, 20:12 GMT

27 Jul 2008, 06:57 GMT
Hmmm sucks having 1300 points cuz I dunno to get this now or wait for megaman and get a new card or two after cuz I kinda want megaman,samurai showdown 2, earthbound and parasol stars uggggh. But I'll prolly get this and get new cards for the rest lol if its that good. And btw objection, do u think megaman is gonna be way different/better from the cheaper vc metroid?
125. Objection_Blaster
27 Jul 2008, 18:16 GMT
@DaDun
Well metroid (NES) is 500 and Super Metroid (SNES) is 800 versus Megaman 9's 1000. In my opinion, I would go for Super Metroid and this (AKA 1300 points!) since we won't be getting Megaman 9 for several months (Oct/Nov likely) And then get a new card for MM9 and something else...I think you'll be happy either way, though

I'm lazy at the moment and not reading all the comments above, so I apologize if someone has already said this:
If DYC lacks one thing, it's downloadable content. Be it new enemies, more spells, or other modes, I would've gladly paid for extra stuff on this game. Let's hope a sequel comes with DLC as well as a bunch more improvements.
