Dr. Mario was the perfect NES game. A bold, simple statement to start this review, but never has a sentence rang so true in the ears of our peers. This was a game that combined mad colours, infectious soundtracks and a delightful twist on the classic..
Dr. Mario Online RX
Dr. Mario Online RX (WiiWare)
The doctor is in! Mario takes a break from his adventuring ways and once again dons his stethoscope for a new generation of germ-battling mayhem. In addition to the classic mode of using vitamins to exterminate viruses, you’ll find two battle modes and an online multiplayer mode where you can hone your skills against players from around the world.
Feel like challenging a friend who doesn’t have Dr. Mario Online Rx? Then the WiiWare-exclusive Friend Battle Demo is just what the doctor ordered. Or maybe you’d like some help taking on those nasty viruses? Try out Virus Buster, where four players can simultaneously move capsules simply by pointing at them with a Wii Remote controller. Any way you look at it, Dr. Mario Online Rx is a prescription for fun that everyone can enjoy.

Zany pill-popping madness with Nintendo's favourite son.

i'm getting this for sure. i loved the nes original (in uni residence, that game was a religion. tons of people were playing it in the common rooms all day and night) and i'm definitely gonna love this one. i still play it on gameboy now and then.

I've never really been able to play a Dr. Mario game before so, I'll make sure to pick this one up.

I finally got to play the original Dr. Mario the other day for the first time. I don't know how it escaped me all these years, but I had a really hard time putting down the controller.
This will be AWESOME!

Not sure about this one; I'm more waiting for Bomberman WiiWare than Dr. Mario.

I hope they put the original NES version out as well. This version looks really cool. Of course it's made by Nintendo, so it will no doubt be excellent.

Is it worth getting the original if this one comes out? Anyway, this new version looks real sweet. I would hate to also get the original and then see that's it's the same game as the new version.

"I have a feeling this will be the first WiiWare game...."
Let us hope so! This is, honestly, my second most hyped about WiiWare, right under Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Little King and the Promised Country, an awesome looking country-builder game!

"It's easy to be critical of a game you just have no hope in hell of getting in to. Not addictive; not aesthetically-pleasing; not fun. Dr. Mario is perhaps my least favourite game of all time. Admittedly, I've never played this edition, BUT LOOK AT IT. Dreadful."
That's what I sai about Dr. Mario 64 on my N64 tribute Bebo page. I'm applying it here too cause it'll be the exact same game!

@StarDust - That has been announced a few days, if not weeks, back.

dr. mario and tetris on a new nintendo system? it's like i'm a kid again... too bad they messed with the fever music (i love the original fever music sooo much)...
23. Jogurt the Yogurt
19 Mar 2008, 04:42 GMT
Do we have an expected price for this yet?
24. Starwolf_UK
19 Mar 2008, 15:30 GMT
@Jogurt the Yogurt. It will be 1000 points in Japan. Can't see them putting the price up for other regions.
I'd be all over this if it was not for the fact i'm essentially buying a game I already have twice only this time with Miis, a mostly ghost town Wi-Fi and that slide mode.
25. rhytwo
21 Mar 2008, 19:47 GMT
This is the only WiiWare game I'll probaly buy. I just hope It has the option to turn the Wiimote on it's side instead of using the motion sensor or I won't ever get a wiiware game
26. calc_nerd
22 Mar 2008, 17:07 GMT
Dr. Mario will never stand a chance to tetris. Dr. Mario 64 was nice playing once or twice, but not worth spending money on. The wii-ware game will be nothing different.
27. Pwnage
26 Mar 2008, 13:19 GMT

-Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life As A King
-Dr.Mario Germ Buster
-Everybody's Pokemon Ranch
-Tiki Tori
-Defend Your Castle
-Tetris
-Bomberman
and by the Way May 12 is when WiiWare comes to America!!!!
WAhoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

24 Apr 2008, 17:03 GMT
Even though it's on WiiWare, it's good to know that there is a new Dr. Mario game. There hasn't been one since Dr. Mario 64. I wonder why the series was absent on the Gamecube compared to other Mario spin-offs?
32. Suasexed
27 Apr 2008, 22:14 GMT
I absolutely loved Dr Mario on the original Game Boy! I was only playing it the other day and managed to get up to level 19 out of 20. Will definitely be getting this for the Wii when WiiWare launches!

09 May 2008, 01:38 GMT
How good is Dr.Mario? Is it different then other puzzle games?
36. WiiGamer24 09 May 2008, 22:32 GMT
@ SuperSonic1990
Dr. Mario is a very highly rated game amongst puzzle games. It is seen as one of the best puzzle games of all time, for various reasons such as it great music and its sheer fun & advictivness. Along with the likes of Tetris, Dr. Mario is part of the 'cream of the crop' out of a countless number of puzzle games out there. Basically if you want a top quality puzzle game, get this
.

Just checked the IGN website and it says that Dr. Mario Online RX will be out next week on the 19th of May.
38. Kevin
12 May 2008, 19:47 GMT
That makes up for today's WiiWare lackluster launch then.
39. Kenji510
13 May 2008, 07:35 GMT
Well just to let u know that next week on the 19th of May were gonna get some cooler wiiware games as...
Dr. Mario
Star Soldier R
Toki Tori
40. Bensei
13 May 2008, 08:42 GMT
Could it be that the feture supports aren't included yet? Beacause I heard about Mii Support, Wifi Support and a special Demo support
41. Kevin
13 May 2008, 12:31 GMT
That's true but right now i'm all about online play despite not getting FFCC My Life as a King.
42. ballkirby1
13 May 2008, 12:53 GMT
is this really coming out next week in the U.S or is it just a guess?
43. KnucklesSonic8
13 May 2008, 18:48 GMT
^ According to IGN it is.
I'm not getting this but I know someone who'd be all over this if he had a Wii.
Anyway, Dr. Mario Rx seems pretty good but personally, I don't think it's worth 1000 especially since I can see it getting repetitive after a while. I'm looking forward to other titles to worry about Dr. Mario.
44. Kenji510
13 May 2008, 20:17 GMT
Its gonna come out next week on the 19th cant wait!!... also some cool shooting game too called "Star Soldier R"
45. KnucklesSonic8
13 May 2008, 20:31 GMT
Yep yep.

Star Soldier R seems great but I'll save that for its game page.
As for Dr. Mario, what I love is how apparently, you can use WC24 to GIFT a Demo to your Wii Friends. Now I just gotta find someone who plans to get Dr. Mario to let me try the game.
46. Objection_Blaster
13 May 2008, 21:14 GMT
@Knuckles. Me too, since I won't pony up for this latest version.
47. KnucklesSonic8
13 May 2008, 21:26 GMT
Heh, yeah. 1000 is just too much of an asking price even though it is a first-party release. Yeah, most don't know the game allows you to let your Friends try a demo of it which I think is a great idea.
48. Clayfrd
14 May 2008, 00:14 GMT
This game seems to borrow a lot of sound effects from the relatively "underplayed" Dr. Mario 64. That is a good thing, though. I highly anticipate this, and I can't wait to play some Dr. Mario online.
49. diegoesgriam
14 May 2008, 01:52 GMT
I want it; i reserved 1000 ponts since March for this game
50. Objection_Blaster
14 May 2008, 02:48 GMT
@Clayfrd
This title probably guarentees we wont get the N64 version on VC, since its this with less features. (assumption)
51. Bensei
14 May 2008, 20:09 GMT
No, DR. Mario 64 has a story mode too, as far as I've heard this has only classic and online multiplayer, but I guess the NES and SNES version would be virtual dust traps
52. Wiireview123
14 May 2008, 20:34 GMT
cant wait for this one! i used to play dr.mario 64 all the time. like my childhood all over again!
53. MrLopez
14 May 2008, 20:37 GMT
In europe it's called dr.mario & Germ buster... Is there a difference??
54. WiiGamer24 14 May 2008, 20:42 GMT
I can't wait for this game, its by far my most anticupated WiiWare game so far.
I've been playing Dr. Wario (an unlockable version on GBA Wario Ware inc. of the NES Dr. Mario with Wario as the doc, limited music and different faced virus') a lot recently because I'm very hyped about this game.
@Bensei sure Dr. Mario 64 has story mode, which this game doesn't (presumably) but I'd take Virus Buster, Mii support and online multiplayer over story mode any day.
55. Objection_Blaster
14 May 2008, 21:27 GMT
@MrLopez
Nope, only silly name changes
56. Clayfrd
15 May 2008, 04:24 GMT
@Objection_Blaster (50) I seriously doubt we'll get Dr. Mario 64 as well. I have Dr. Mario 64, though, and I was saying the sounds were directly borrowed from said game. IMHO, Dr. Mario 64 is the best Dr. Mario, and I hope this is just as good or better. It looks fantastic, and the new controls look promising.
57. KnucklesSonic8
15 May 2008, 15:02 GMT
Dr. Mario 64 = Doubt it. But my friend is a huge enthusiast of DM64 so he'd be all over this if he had a Wii.
58. Big=Sexy
15 May 2008, 18:09 GMT
Dr. Mario 64 also had the insane 4p versus mode, which was frantic, crazy and one of its best features.

I really hope this game comes out this Monday DX.
60. Kenji510

I dont think we are gonna get Dr. Mario on monday at all, i can already tell... we got the 2 set wiiware games coming up monday already and they are...

Star Soldier R
Well if you European people are gonna get Dr. Mario, i hope you really enjoy it and have fun playing online too.

18 May 2008, 13:25 GMT
I'm starting to look forward to this, it's great that the demo feature is going to be available for us. I wonder if we Australians will get the games on either the Tuesday or Wednesday...
64. Kenji510
18 May 2008, 21:50 GMT
I think to me the reason why were not getting this game tomorrow cause were gonna get Wii Fit on wedesday as well and they want people to try it, play and enjoy it as well... thats what i think.
65. Objection_Blaster
19 May 2008, 03:54 GMT
whats the big deal about Wii Fit? No gamer wants it, just the casuals and grandmas. IMO
66. Big=Sexy
19 May 2008, 04:48 GMT
I seriously doubt that's why we may not get it tomorrow. From what I hear, the amount of pre-orders for Wii Fit are staggeringly high, despite the "non-game" image people are getting from it. Americans will eat it up if you can package fitness as fun.
Hell, I'd probably get it myself, but the weight limit is what makes it unplayable for me. I just want Dr. Mario already.
67. StarDust
19 May 2008, 06:06 GMT
@Big=Sexy: Wow! I am a fairly large dude (27 years, 5'11", and averaging in size between 250 and 275 pounds), and I immediately thought that I would never be able to use it, but I just looked up the specs and apparently, it supports up to 300 pounds!
I need to stay in shape to maintain health, which is why I sometimes ride my bike 7.5 miles to work instead of taking the city bus. I love my Wii (and the rest of my old-school Nintendo collection) for the games, and wonder would I really take the time to do this everyday, or just wanna use my Wii to Brawl, Kart, stomp goombas, etc? My mother would probably appreciate this more than I would.

71. tehpwnr
19 May 2008, 15:19 GMT
One more thing...I have a little dilema...i ran out of memory on my wii a while ago, from buying soo many vc games...and have since had to use an s.d. card...anyone else see the problem with this??? i do, becuase its a nuisance having to always copy onto my wii when i want to play something...Nintendo should make an extra something to stick in ones wii, that makes it hold more!!! if you agree, comment back =P

Quick question, for the people who have already purchased it, are you able to control the game using the WiiMote as a classic Nintendo controller - without having to point at the screen? I hope so...
75. Bluezealand
20 May 2008, 01:08 GMT
There are two different modes. The one with the classical control is even bigger
76. x.SuperMario.x
20 May 2008, 02:11 GMT
this game is never coming out in the US.
77. Jona
20 May 2008, 02:55 GMT
in my mind i think dr mario is like tetris
78. poggydude
20 May 2008, 03:02 GMT
@ Jona-- not really(I find this trickier and 100% more addicting)
BTW I need a review before I can determine if it is worth it or if I should just stick to my NES version
whoever can answer whether it is so much better plz do
79. Kenji510
20 May 2008, 06:22 GMT
@x.SuperMario.x- oh its coming alright and it better be out next week on the 26th of Memorial Day... i dont want to wait anymore and im just sick of it already... i dont have patience either.
80. Raptor78
20 May 2008, 09:48 GMT
I got this as soon as wiiware became availablein the UK (early hours of the morning before I went to bed)
...and its good. Its actually decent value because they have used a similar online scheme as they used with Mario Kart wii, reaaly easy to find online random matches using the 5000 point staring rank system, you can invite frineds (who dont even have the game) to play online... good use of mii support, nice selection of ingame options in regard to type of game, speed & difficulty etc...
also the Germ Buster game is very fun, especially in 4 player mode.
I have to say this is VERY good value for money at 1000 points.
81. Pocketim
20 May 2008, 09:56 GMT
I downloaded the demo, once I have played it with someone I will decide if I will get it.
82. Raptor78
20 May 2008, 10:10 GMT
@ Pocketim - Can you play random "worldwide" matches on the demo version? Because I went out and bought the full version straight away I have no idea what the options are like on the demo version...
also for 1000 points you effectively get TWO games
The Germ Buster game seems like a different game altogether, much more like a four player party game although you can play solo if you like. So bare that in mind once you have played the demo a few times.
83. Kenji510
20 May 2008, 11:29 GMT
I hope we still gonna get this game on the 26th cause now i see other wiiware game on the "Coming Soon" section like Gyrostarr, World of Goo and Toki Tori.... I be surprised if we did got all 4 wiiware games next week and one of them has to be Dr. Mario in it too as well... i dont want to see this date change again just like it was on the 12th, the 19th and now its posted on the 26th.. this better be the final release date and keep it the way it is too.
84. Lando
20 May 2008, 20:19 GMT

85. KnucklesSonic8
20 May 2008, 21:19 GMT

@KnucklesSonic8- yeah i know i really hope so too... only 5 more days to goooooooo!
87. Big=Sexy
21 May 2008, 18:57 GMT
@Stardust -
Last I heard, the Balance Board only supported 250 pounds. I'm at 275-280 right now, and my DDR pad is gathering dust because it takes up so much room that I can't use it in my new abode. That is, without going to the living room and disrupting anyone's chance of doing anything out there.
If it does support 300 pounds, then I'd like to get it - I prefer to have fun while getting fit, rather than just getting fit. I could use it in my bedroom (from what I've seen, it's not all that big) and its simplicity would probably want my other family members to try it out, too.
In other news, Dr. Mario apparently kicks ass. Really pulling for US release next Monday.
88. Mike
24 May 2008, 14:24 GMT
There is no reason why Dr. Mario won't be out on Monday. Europe and Japan already have it.
89. Kenji510
24 May 2008, 22:33 GMT
Well... we need this game too since there are Dr. Mario fans in the U.S. as well and ive been waiting for this game for so long too since the wiiware launched and only 2 more days to go... hopefully the 26th is the final release date... no more waiting please!

Dr. Mario is second on my must have wiiware games at the moment. So far I want lostwinds more. But this will be my first Dr. Mario ever, so I'll probably have fun, I'm hoping someone will send me a demo first though.

Dr. Mario takes less memory in the US than Europe but more than Japan. Weird.
100. Ircha
27 May 2008, 20:00 GMT
I'm actually more fond of the Tetris consept that the Dr.Mario consept.
I guess this is not a game for me, even though I love the Mario character. I'm sorry.
101. Big=Sexy
28 May 2008, 20:18 GMT
Whoa, scoring on this game has changed quite a bit.
Creating chains that kill viruses now give greater rewards than ever, but clearing anything sans virus will net you nothing. Except, of course, in versus mode, where it still throws out garbage.
Also going beyond level 20 now gives more viruses, despite not being able to actually select beyond level 20. If I remember right, even Dr. Mario 64 didn't add any viruses beyond 20.
Too bad there isn't a marathon mode. I had hoped at least that would return. Still, this game is quite awesome. Gonna need to play more worldwide matches if I want to go up that leaderboard, though.

And I Love It.

I got it yesterday. It's loads of fun, classic and Virus Buster are both equally great. I can't beleve I ued to think that Dr. Mario would be the biggest waste of points ever.

Someone please answer his question. The difference between a 100 and 200 block game is bigger to me than any other factor right now.

@Roboto
So how big is Dr Mario to download now? Can you get the smaller version instead?

The file size is still the same for the US: 93 blocks. I had to delete it first to make room for the re-download because my Wii system memory is stuffed. I am a big Classic controller fan, so this download is a no-brainer for me.

I've never played Dr. Mario before, how is it? I've played falling block puzzlers before and I've honestly never liked them, with the exception of Tetris, Lumines, and Meteos. Falling block puzzlers(with the exception of the ones I just mentioned) have a tendency to screw you, by giving you a piece that you absolutely don't need, and wind up having to cover up a potential line, because you had to put it /somewhere/.
Does Dr. Mario come with this game-ruining fault?

@Kenji510
Thanks, you inadvertantly answered all of my questions and convinced me that the game is fun and worth buying, as I quickly went to the video review from that IGN link you posted. The review was very helpful, especially since it showed, and explained, a lot of the gameplay. It also gave a different take on the Virus Busters portion of the game, saying how it's better for co-op, but can be done competitively. Now I'd buy it just for the Virus Busters, though the rest looks okay, too, since it doesn't seems like the computer screws you very often by giving you a piece that you can't use, especially in Virus Busters, as it seems like it would be physically impossible not to find a use for one of them. Once again, thank you, and thank you IGN for reminding me why I used to go there so much.
Not to say the review here is lacking, it was informative, it's just that, what I really needed was a video that isn't ripped from the Nintendo Channel, because that one wasn't ever really all that helpful to begin with.
