Retro Styled Castlevania Coming To WiiWare?

Retro style Castlevania? Yes please!

Retro style Castlevania? Yes please!

In an interview with Wired, the current Castlevania series producer, Koji Igarashi (who you might know as the man who nearly always wears a black cowboy hat and carries around a whip) was asked what he thinks about Mega Man 9. He responded as follows:

I'm watching that very closely to see how it does. Myself, I'm a big retro gaming fan, so if it is successful that definitely opens up doors for what I can do.

Does this mean we can expect a new 8-bit or 16-bit Castlevania game? There hasn't been an actually new "classic" Castlevania game for years - The last one was just a remake, after all. If a retro Castlevania game is eventually made, we personally hope it's either like Castlevania III or Super Castlevania IV. What would you like?

Castlevania has been one of my favorite series, ever since I was like 5 years old playing the original at my aunt and uncle's house! I would love to see a new retro Castlevania game. Something similar to Castlevania III would be awesome.

This is exactly what I had hoped Mega Man 9 would do for other developers out there. Hopefully it will sell well enough to make them want to do it too.

Igarashi should forget all this Wii motion whipping nonsense and make a 2D SNES style Castlevania game. That would be amazing! Better than a poor man's Soul Calibur anyway! :D

YES, YES, YES! RETRO REVOLUTION!!!!!

I think that established retro game series would do well going back to their roots just as Megaman have done. Even overused games series such as Sonic the hedgehog would do well by going back to their 8-bit / 16-bit roots.

Forget Castlevania... Let's see a new 2D Metroid on WiiWare... or how about Earthworm Jim 4?

12. Omega Germany 24 Jul 2008, 17:22 GMT

I think that the latest castlevania games on the Nintendo DS "Dawn of Sorrow" and "Portrait of Ruin" are very good. They are retro-style in terms of graphic and atmosphere but with more detailed sprites and backgrounds. And they have all that RPG-Elements, weapons, magic etc. And the levels are non-linear and much bigger.

I want a completely new designed castlevania for Wiiware that is like on the Nintendo DS. I don't want "a new" 8-bit castlevania. This is water under the bridge now.

I completely agree with Omega.

I liked Castlevania 3 very much. I'm more of an old school gamer, (even though I grew up in the fifth generation.) so this is just awesome for me.

Between Mega Man, Gradius, and now Castlevania, it's starting to become too much. :o Retro is cool, but it's starting to turn into a bandwagon.

For the record though, a game styled after Castlevania 1 would be cool.

I've never played a Castlevania so I would be unaffected either way. I don't really have an urge to play it either, this would be good for fans though :)

Oh God, he better not retro-make Castlevania. Let him make a new one please with updated graphics and advanced moves and what not, but don't let this retro-make thing become a fad.

Super Castlevania V could be the greatest thing ever. Yes Castlevania III was fantastic and another in that style was great, but damnit IV on the SNES blew I-III away.

Awesome news!

I'd rather see a game more in the vein of Simon's Quest. That's still my all-time favorite Castlevania title. But at this point, I'll take anything! :)

They should rename Wiiware into New Virtual Console

24. Rapadash6 United States 24 Jul 2008, 21:03 GMT

I so hope this happens. Mega Man 9 could very well be the start of a huge trend of retro style games and that's a trend I can get behind.

I think this'd be pretty cool, the original Castlevania was what got me interested in the first place, and it's been a while since we've seen a more straight-forward Castlevania game. Keep those retros coming!

I'd be up for a Castlevania WiiWare title.

I wouldn't mind a remake of Castlevania 3 on Wii ware. As long as it's just a graphical upgrade and keeps the core of what made that game so special. Dracula's curse Is my favorite of the classic games. I'm still waiting patiently for Rondo of blood to be added to the Wii shop in the U.S. It's probably my most wanted VC game.

Meh. I've never liked Castlevania.
But if it'll make other people happy...

Besides, people are overreacting.
The guy said there are possibilities, and some people are already deciding on it's name?
Jesus, calm down.

If you never liked Castlevania then why are you even commenting on this story? If you're not interested why bother adding you're two cents? Just curious.

I think he just threw that in there, the main purpose of his comment is apparently to remind everybody that this article is purely speculative.

Mabey the should add another option to the wiiware section of the shop dedicated to "New Virtual Console" where publishers could release New versions of old Classics.

I don't care much for a retro Castlevania, but I would love to see a new 2D Metroid title. Personally, I prefer the 2D ones to the 3D Prime series (except maybe Hunters and Corruption)

Avatar

34. AlexSays United States 25 Jul 2008, 01:19 GMT

@ Link79-

People are only allowed to comment on things that make them happy?
Riight. I'll remember that.
Besides you completely missed the whole point of my comment.
People are preparing themselves for disappointment.

Like Mickeymac said, this article is purely speculative.
But somehow people are getting so excited over a game that doesn't exist.
Crazy, I know.

I realy wouldn't want a retrovania, I never enjoyed the past castlevania's excluding 4. I felt they were to slow and not as pretty and action-packed as the newer rendentions. I would personally pay up to 100 smackaroos for an 8 - Bit Zelda or mario.
Peace...

@Tides
dido to the 2D metroid's, did'nt even think of a wiiware version of that style, it would be a perfect game. Think about how clean and pretty samus's movements would be if it came to wiiware!
again great idea!

Avatar

38. Mr. Cheez United States 25 Jul 2008, 04:35 GMT

Hey Konami, would you stop stealing Capcom's idea already? Mega Man in retro style was cool, but now this trend's starting to get annoying.

Don't get me wrong, I could definitely go for an old-school-style castlevania (even though the "Metroid-vanias" blow them out of the water IMO), but if I recall, this is 2008. Use a graphics engine that looks like it!

@Tides. Hells yeah! I'm totally down for a new 2D Metroid! The cancellation of Metroid Dread made me a very sad panda. :(

Avatar

39. Mickeymac United States 25 Jul 2008, 04:58 GMT

@Mr. Cheez

They aren't making it. I don't even think they're thinking about it. The only announced retro remakes from Konami is Gradius Rebirth. All we're saying is it would be cool IF they made it.

Edit: Okay, they are thinking about it at least, so you get browny points there, but still, they'll only get serious about it if the other retro remakes are successful.

40. Tony United States 25 Jul 2008, 10:40 GMT

@ Corbie

Thanks for defending Simons Quest. That game gets no love from fanboys. It was one of my favs as well. But I would take any 2D Castlevania if its retro or not.

Anyway the Gradius remake is good news as well. Don't forget Life Force Konami and NOA!

I would hope that they would make a castlevania game about Julius belmont from 1999, where he killed dracula for good (well, kind of) (AND PLEAS IN 2D). Or if not, maybe a remake of Castlevania 3, SOTN or Bloodlines? Or if not, What about Gradius?

new old castlevania? awesomeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

43. Snorlax United States 25 Jul 2008, 21:25 GMT

I was hoping that Megaman 9 would bring discussion about older styles being brought to Wiiware. I would enjoy a 2d metroid, 2d Castlevania, 2d Mario, 2d Adventure Island, 2d Street Fighter or Mortal combat, etc.

Hopefully this new "retro" thing will bring about a sort of devolution in gaming. The quality of most games seems to have went downhill, like music and television.

An 8-bit Castlevania game following the footsteps of Castlevania 3 with multiple paths, multiple playable characters and amazing soundtrack (VRC-6 chip style like in the famicom version), i would buy it any time, even sooner than megaman 9 actually !

Avatar

45. The_Indigo_Effect United States 25 Jul 2008, 23:10 GMT

It's odd that Konami has no problem creating a new Gradius title, but when it comes to a new Castlevania, they've chosen to wait and see how well Mega Man 9 does. Prediction: Mega Man 9 sells like gangbusters; does anyone expect it not to?

I reckon MM9 will blow MPR's top spot away. Anyway, didn't they say that they were already making a Vania WW?

I think it's only a matter or time before the best series ever gets another installment :)

I've unfortunately never played III. IV was good, but I'd much rather something with Symphony of the Night-ish graphics. I don't think Castlevania has ever looked better.

Whether the gameplay is linear or an open castle, I'm sure it'll be great either way. It's one of those few consistently good 2D series (if not the only one) still going, so I'm confident they'll do a great job.

48. NoCashBob 29 Jul 2008, 07:57 GMT

Retro is designed for us 22-34 year olds who have a job, credit cards, and don't need to pester mommy and daddy for money for their new game, so all you ' I want customization, new advanced moves' kiddies go play in the sandbox please. I would love to see you kids dropped into metroid. 'How come it doesn't tell me where to go? where's the map' lols.

Gamers of my generation wan't and would love this. I hate new Megaman (past X3). Megaman should only be shooting left and right, that's the mechanic.

Who else thinks that a new SNES era Metroid is in order? Nintendo can allow gamers to create their own game scenarios, and Nintendo can sell their own mission packs for say 250 Wii Points.

Here's what I'd love to see: Metroid, Castlevania, Zelda, Mario, (more) Megaman, ICOM games (think Shadowgate) and more. I think they should include SNES era as well as NES though, as both 2D retro styles were fantastic.

New content for my favorite retro games? Where do I pre-order, and Visa or Mastercard?
