Honestly, I'll take the sexy golden cartridge over controllers I'll never use.

Really kind of puts over the NA version being a bit of a ripoff since the price is about the same - 9,878 yen is about $63 US - and it's including controllers that would cost that much by themselves here.

I really appreciate all the NSO controllers. One of my favorite moves by Nintendo this generation.

@Lizuka To be fair, that’s largely due to the current exchange rate. The dollar is strong and the yen incredibly weak. You can go out and get a slap up dinner in Kyoto for the price of… I don’t know, a pizza in New York.

In more concrete ‘gamer’ terms, the OLED Switch is about $100 (~30%) cheaper in Japan than the US at current exchange rates. For Americans, it’s a great time to visit the country and spend like crazy — which partly explains the current tourism boom.

But this product is aimed at the Japanese market, which consists of people paid in yen. From a domestic perspective, it’s not super cheap: around 25% more expensive than Tears of the Kingdom for a retro throwback collection.

In terms of savings, the Fami Controllers and physical Switch game would cost ¥6,578 + ¥3,828 = ¥10,406 if bought separately, which is ¥528 ($3.39) less than the ¥9,878 being charged for this Deluxe edition. Obviously there’s other stuff in the box aside from the game and the controllers, but it goes to show that the savings aren’t astronomical.

TL;DR: Dollar strong, yen weak, everything in Japan is (relatively) cheap for Americans right now.

Excess inventory

Nah. I'd rather just play with the nso SNES controller and pretend it's a dogbone. I grew up with the NES and I still don't understand why anyone willingly would use that painful rectangle controller anymore. But I'd throw my money so fast if they ever made an NES Max for the Switch.

So the Famicom controllers for Switch doesn't come with start and select for one of the controllers? I know the original didn't have them, but it's really a hindrance nowadays especially compared to the NES counterparts.

@Coalescence I grew up with the NES top loader and that fixed many of the original NES's design flaws like dusty cartridges. It sucks that it's completely overlooked in terms of NES nostalgia, since I'd love to have a dogbone controller replica for the Switch.

Are any of the games different?

Anyone know if the Famicom version has better Dpads? The NES ones have the same flaw as the Pro Controller, errant diagonals. I know Nintendo can do better because the 80s versions didn’t have these problems, and the SNES switch controller doesn't either.

@Coalescence They arent painful at all, especially the original 80s wired version. They are super lightweight. I don’t know where the myth about them being painful comes from? Probably just looking at them? Most people talk about the corners when they say this… but the corners don’t touch your hand at all, only the sides of the controller will touch your hand. You would have to purposely contort your hands around the bottom of the controller for the corners to touch you. Its just like holding and smartphone or tablet in landscape. Your phone corners dont touch you, and the flat sides of a phone dont cause pain, and those are much heavier and made of metal or glass.

Two useful controllers while we get a fake cartridge? Seems fair, Nintendo of America.

@jco83 I understand why the original Famicom has them, but since the Switch doesn't have a microphone the empty space on the second controller is just wasted.

Has anyone residing outside of Japan successfully ordered this Famicom World Championship Special Edition from Japan?
I've been trying intermittently since last night with no luck.

I have a Japanese Nintendo account, Japanese shipping address, and I'm using my Jpn Eshop card balance for payment (My Nintendo Japan online store does not allow the use of foreign c.cards or paypal).

I click "preorder" to add the item to my cart, go through the shopping cart checkout, and each time it ends in an "unexpected error." I'm a former long-term resident of Japan and have shopped online in Japanese many times (on other store sites) over the years, so my comprehension probably is not the problem. I worry the item is out of stock and Nintendo just isn't updating their site.

Damnit this always happens to me, I finally got my hands on the Japanese nso famicom controllers and then five days later they do this *****

@Teksetter I'm in Canada and was able to pre-order the Japanese version to ship to Canada via Amazon Japan.

Thanks for the info! I actually preordered a copy off of Amazon.jp last night, too.
But get this! Just minutes after Amazon confirms my order, they send me an auto-generated email saying they are cancelling my order and refunding payment because based on my activity they suspect I'm a reseller!
Needless to say I am NOT a reseller and the ONE copy I ordered was for me and my family only! I've never come under suspicion like this before and frankly, it's GD ridiculous.
I think it is probably bc I asked them to ship to a proxy shipper's address in Japan (which I have done with Amazon JP orders once or twice in the past) rather than to my home address in the USA.

I was told to reply to the email if I'd like to appeal, so right away I put on my Japanese thinking cap and typed up the most formal and yet offended short email I could manage. I haven't heard back from them, though... UGH

If the price isn't inflated too much today, I may try the direct-ship to USA method and see if that works. Or I may just give up and try for the NA physical release. I've spent thousands of dollars with Amazon.jp in the Switch era - you'd think they wouldn't let their lousy AI harass me like this.

It's good that you got into Amazon.jp quickly and were able to preorder it at retail/list JPY8980 price. It's only resellers offering the item now, priced at JPY12,000 or more (and they don't offer international shipping).

I'm still tempted to get it at that JPY12,000 price (since the USD is so strong against the yen right now), but I'll wait to see if Amazon follows up with me before I do anything. I'm so annoyed by the whole situation, I might just cancel my other preorders with them and shop elsewhere.

I'll shop with Super Potato or Joshin or Yodobashi Camera like in my Osaka days and just use proxy shipping if I have to.

For some reason the Famicom controllers appeal more to me than the NES ones, but I probably wouldn't really use either much, I mostly play handheld.
