Super Mario RPG: The Three Musty Fears Side Quest - Where To Find The Three Flags

Super Mario RPG doesn't have many side quests, but you'll come across this unusual game of hide-and-seek towards the end of the story before you get your sixth Star Piece.

The Three Musty Fears are three undead characters who want you to play a little game of find the flag with them. This minigame will take you on a journey across the world, but it's worth doing for the reward.

In this guide, we'll tell you where to start the Three Musty Fears side quest, where to find the three flags, and what you get for completing this side quest. Let's-a-go!

Where do you start the Three Musty Fears Side Quest?

You'll get the 3 Musty Fears side quest in Monstro Town, which you reach after going through Land's End and Belome Temple.

To start this quest, head to the house at the end of the row in Monstro Town. This house contains a bed, which you can rest in. Turn off the Mushroom Lamp and hop in the bed, and you'll be greeted by a Boo, a Dry Bones, and a Greaper.

What do you have to do in the Three Musty Fears Side Quest?

The 3 Musty Fears will tell you that they want to play a little game of hide-and-seek, except what you’re seeking is a flag they’ve placed somewhere in the world.

You'll need to find all three flags to claim your reward from the ghosts. They each give you a vague hint as to where they placed it, so talk to them if you want to try and figure it out yourself.

Where to find the three flags

Of course, you could try and figure it out yourself, but we'll tell you the location of all three flags to make things a little easier.

The flags are invisible, so you'll have to press the 'A' button in the below locations in order for it to appear.

Greaper's Flag - Rose Town

Greaper's flag can be found in Rose Town. Return there and head behind the flower sign right behind the entrance to find your first flag.

Dry Bones' Flag - Mario's Pad

In a slightly alarming move, Dry Bones has managed to place his flag in your home.

Return to your abode, head inside, and check under the bed to find this flag.

Boo's Flag - Yo'ster Isle

The last flag is at Yo'ster Isle, which is an optional area of the game. If you haven't been there yet, you'll need to head through Pipe Vault to reach this island of Yoshis. Check out our walkthrough on both Pipe Vault and Yo'ster Isle for the easiest way to get there.

If you have been there before, you can simply fast-travel there from the Map menu. Once you reach the island, you'll find Boo's flag between the “O” and “A” of the goalpost.

What's the reward for completing the 3 Musty Fears Side Quest?

Once you've found all three flags, return to Monstro Town and to the house where you slept. Turn out the light and get into bed again, and you'll get a Ghost Medal.

The Ghost Medal is an extremely useful accessory that halves damage you take when worn in battle, so this quest was definitely worth the trouble.
